IELTS versions: which option is best for you?
The academic version is aimed at candidates applying to higher-education programmes in English-speaking countries, e.g. Bachelors, Masters or PhD programmes.
Aimed at candidates seeking professional positions or internships, or who are planning to emigrate to an English-speaking country.
What’s the exam like?
Both versions of the exam provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four key linguistic skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The listening and speaking parts are identical in both versions of the test; only the reading and writing sections differ between General and Academic IELTS.
There are no pass or fail grades in the IELTS; instead, each of the key language competencies is assessed on a scale from 1 to 9.
The final mark is determined by calculating the average across all four sections. The candidate will be awarded an overall grade on a scale from 1 to 9.
The IELTS exam takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete.
