OUR METHOD FOR LEARNING ENGLISH

NUMBER 16 METHOD: DIRECT AND CONVERSATION-BASED

You’ll think in English!

  • Our goal is to get you thinking in English so you can speak it fluently and with confidence. To achieve this, we use a method of total immersion in the language: our classes are 100% in English, and they’re taught by native English-speaking teachers of up to 9 different nationalities.
  • Our teachers share their knowledge with enthusiasm and energy, making the classes lively and enjoyable. They’ll show you that although learning English is a long journey, the ride can also be pretty fun!
  • Conversation is the cornerstone of our method. At last, you’ll learn to communicate in English!

First practice, then theory

We spent years studying the flaws of traditional methods and analysing the difficulties students faced in learning with them. Even after years of study, they were often unable to communicate fluently in English. We decided to turn the learning process on its head. After all, we learn our first language by speaking it. Why should a second language be any different?

Speak English fluently and with confidence

Our classes encourage spoken production so that students learn to express themselves correctly without needing to fall back on their native language. When we learn our mother tongue, we start off by understanding and assimilating new words and phrases, then we start speaking, and finally we learn to read and write. Then, once we’ve got the hang of all that, we learn the grammar in depth. This is the natural process that should be followed when learning ANY language, including English!

Natural and well-grounded learning based on repetition

Our method for learning English is conversation based. It’s structured in 16 levels through which students advance progressively, with plenty of repetition along the way to help them reinforce their learning and perfect their pronunciation.

In every lesson, you’ll learn new words and structures. And grammar is taught in a light and student-friendly way so that learning it becomes automatic.

The core dynamic of our classes consists of guided conversations based on a question-and-answer structure through which students can improve their pronunciation and intonation.

The teacher explains the meaning of each new word, gradually introducing a wider and wider range of grammatical structures. This is followed by a dialogue in which the students interact by answering the teacher’s questions – questions to which they must always respond in full sentences. Students learn to use the new vocabulary and structures in a natural way, without translating, hesitating or stopping to think about grammar.

What’s more, with our method of learning English, students have to adapt to the teacher’s natural speaking speed, and not vice versa. This is how things work in the real world, in the kinds of real-life situations you’d encounter outside on the street. You’ll be constantly hearing and using English, and interacting with the teachers and your classmates. In our fast-paced classes, there’s no time to stop and translate, so you’ll soon find that the process of communication becomes all but automatic.

At N16, we keep our teachers on constant rotation to make sure that you’re exposed to the widest possible variety of accents. This helps students boost their listening skills, making comprehension quicker and more efficient. Before long, you’ll be able to understand any native English-speaker, no matter what part of the world they come from!

The Number 16 Method ensures that you’ll learn to speak English with accurate pronunciation. English is one of the world’s least phonetic languages, with a low correspondence between sound and spelling. That is to say, many words in English aren’t written how they sound, and vice versa. By presenting vocabulary first in spoken form, we ensure that you’ll learn new words exactly as they’re pronounced, sidestepping the confusion that often results when learners try to sound out new vocabulary letter by letter. And of course, our teachers will correct any slips in pronunciation so you can be confident you’re speaking the language correctly.

It has been proven that repetition is a natural and effective learning method.

When we spend time repeating something that we want to memorise – a poem, a presentation, a set of vocabulary items – we’re essentially retracing a specific path in our brains, strengthening the neural connections along the way. By reinforcing these neural pathways, we make the information easier and quicker to recall next time we need it.

With our method for learning English, you’ll learn new words and structures in one class and then review them repeatedly in later classes, hearing and using the new language in various different questions and contexts. This structured repetition will reinforce your learning until the new language is firmly embedded in your memory. Even if something seems tricky at first, it’ll be easier the second time round – and by the third or fourth time it’ll feel like a piece of cake. As you progress through each unit, your responses will become quicker and quicker, and you’ll learn to speak English spontaneously, without needing to think or translate.

Once you’ve thoroughly assimilated the new language, and can use it accurately and spontaneously in class, the teacher will set you exercises to complete.

The purpose of these exercises is to consolidate your learning. Up to now, you’ve been using the new language exclusively in its spoken form – but now you’ll learn to write it, too.

We use two types of exercises to allow you to practise all your key language skills, both receptive and productive. On the one hand, we have exercises which focus on reinforcing speaking skills: dictations, role plays, pronunciation exercises … Then there are exercises to develop your reading and writing skills: reading comprehensions, writing tasks, vocabulary and grammar exercises, dictations …

Number 16 Method:

Learn by speaking!

Number 16 classes encourage spoken production so that you can learn to express yourself correctly without needing to fall back on your native language.

When we learn our native language, we start by listening and understanding. After that, we learn to speak the language – and finally to read, write and perfect it. Finally, once we’ve got the hang of all that, we learn the grammar in depth. This is the natural process that should be followed when learning any language, not just our mother tongue. This is the central idea on which our method for learning English is based.

In the traditional system for learning languages, this process is back to front. That’s why people studying English so often fail to achieve their goals, and end up investing years of effort without ever gaining the ability to communicate.

In our method, the teacher explains the meaning of each new word, gradually introducing a wider and wider range of grammatical structures. This is followed by a dialogue in which the students interact by answering the teacher’s questions – questions to which they must always respond in full sentences.
